These briefs were developed with a mixed-methods approach, drawing on previous environmental and climate-security research and a large consultation conducted by EIP in Yemen, alongside available desk-based data and secondary sources. This mapping provides an overview of key environmental pressures, climate risks, and conflict dynamics in 13 Yemeni governorates where our project operates.

The profiles are intended to inform actors working in Yemen to participate in the development of climate and environment-sensitive programming and policy design, as well as consider ideas for new integrated projects combining peace and environmental components.

Conducted in partnership with PAX, this assessment investigates Yemen’s waste crisis as a result of the armed conflict and reflects on ways to address it as a contribution to peacemaking, conflict prevention, and stabilisation. It is grounded in a mix of data sources and methods to analyse Yemen’s solid waste situation in an integrated manner, including (1) an extensive literature review to understand and build on the existing body of knowledge; (2) a geospatial analysis of available open-source data on the solid waste situation in Yemen; and (3) primary qualitative data gathered through key informant interviews.

EIP-PAX_Solid Waste Sites in Yemen

The consultation employed a comprehensive mixed-method approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative tools, including a survey, focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs). Participants were selected to represent different societal groups, ranging from ordinary citizens and marginalised groups, to more influential individuals on the community, district, or governorate level. The total number of individual participants was 3,694.
