Introduction

The Environmental Pathways for Reconciliation (EPfR) project aims to contribute to sustainable peace in Yemen by engaging different strata of the Yemeni society in environmental dialogue and cooperation.

The protracted conflict has contributed to large-scale environmental degradation and the deterioration of Yemen’s natural resources. Destructive military activity is coupled with a shortfall in public management and unsustainable livelihood practices, all driven by the political, economic, and humanitarian urgencies. Around two-thirds of Yemen’s population depend on some form of humanitarian assistance. Lacking basic services, many people resort to unsustainable practices such as deforestation, a shift to water-intensive cash crops, and well-drilling.
